The full-time Social Media & Digital Content Specialist, reporting to the Director of Communications, applies creativity and storytelling skills to help tell MIAD’s story and advance the College’s key brand messages. This specialist enlivens our external and internal communications by creating engaging content for diverse audiences on our digital platforms, including social media, web and e-newsletters.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Social Media Management

  • Plan and execute a social media strategy that strengthens MIAD’s brand and builds engagement with target audiences (students, alumni, donors, corporate & community partners). 
  • Coordinate day-to-day duties including planning, creating and scheduling relevant and engaging content, writing social copy, capturing photos and videos, and developing organic and paid ad campaigns. 
  • Monitor social channels for community engagement, conversation opportunities and reputational threats. Respond appropriately to follower comments and messages. 
  • Track, analyze and report social media metrics to determine effectiveness of campaigns and make data-driven content decisions. 
  • Work collaboratively with staff and faculty to coordinate college-wide content and provide strategic social media counsel to internal stakeholders (administrators, faculty and staff) to optimize promotional opportunities across the College. 
  • Participate in social media duties during emergency communication situations. 
  • Follow social media best practices, and stay up-to-date on social media trends, tools, channels, design and strategy. 

Digital Content Creation

  • Play a key role in developing the College’s video storytelling for social media and other digital communications. 
  • Write scripts or interview questions for video content, shoot and edit videos and take photographs. 
  • Write content for and execute distribution of monthly email newsletters to external audiences via Constant Contact and weekly eblasts to internal audiences. 
  • Using the college’s WordPress content management system, update website and blog content on select pages, such as news, events, gallery exhibitions and parent communications.

Media Relations/PR

  • Support media relations efforts with writing content and submitting information to professional newsletters and online event calendars. 
  • Help prepare media kits for distribution to media. 
  • Assist in responding to media inquiries to coordinate interviews or supply photos/videos.

Administrative activities

  • Assist with set up for major college events (setting up signage/marketing materials, greeting guests, live tweeting, etc.). 
  • Proofread marketing materials for other staff members. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, public relations, marketing or related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in journalism, digital communication, marketing, social media or related field. 
  • Experience developing organic and paid social media strategies. 
  • Excellent copywriting skills with understanding of audience, voice, tone and nuance of language. 
  • Knowledge of AP style and keen attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, deadlines and changing priorities while working under limited supervision. 
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, web content management systems, email marketing platforms and basic HTML. Experience with Google Drive programs. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop and Premiere) to create visual media.
  • Expert knowledge of social media tools, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Hootsuite. 
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for events such as MIAD Creativity Series, MIAD Holiday Sale, Creative Fusion and gallery events. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical storytelling practices. 
  • Interest in higher education or arts and design education. 
  • Photography and video editing/storytelling experience a plus.
