Plans and manages special events, representing The Salvation Army in community events and in the media. Writes, manages, and edits content for the organization’s social media sites, website, other online services, as well as newsletters and other publications.

  • Creates and edits all external use communications; writes articles for print and submits to local news outlets, mail appeal, or blog posts.
  • Ensures clear and open lines of communication with the community. As assigned, attends public meetings that are relevant to TSA operations, and reports back to leadership with relevant information.
  • Handles media inquiries, photo opportunities, setting up interviews, corps updates, etc.
  • Manages and maintains an active social media marketing presence for the Capital Area Command, tracks media coverage, and maintains the website. Responds to online-generated questions from the public. Manages content and events calendars, and online photo gallery.
  • Supports the organization with implementation of internal and external marketing campaign themes and strategies, including coordination of production of materials (kettle signs, brochures, etc.).
  • Designs and produces creative, effective, and (info) graphics, as well as Annual Reports, Community Report Cards, and other publications.
  • Produces short videos to accompany stories and PSAs for maximum reach.
  • Makes presentations to service clubs and local organizations to educate the community about The Salvation Army; host tours of TSA facilities.
  • Plans and coordinates details to ensure successful execution of special events including the Golden Bell Ringers Appreciation Event, the Tin Cup Luncheon, and Red Kettle Reception. Develops and manages a budget for each event in cooperation with the DOD. Develops and maintains event manuals for each event. Negotiates contracts with vendors and prepares contracts to submit to the Divisional Finance Board for final approval.
  • Collaborates with the Volunteer Coordinator to assess volunteer needs and specific roles for each special event.
  • Conducts event post mortem, providing complete reports to the supervisor with recommendations for improvement. Follows-up with donors and sponsors after each event.
  • Researches and proposes ideas for new fundraising events.
  • Works with Corps Officers/Administrators to promote TSA’s participation in community events and fairs while promoting awareness of regular programs and services.
  • Attends Salvation Army special events and captures photos, interacts with participants, and shares live updates from the event on social media.
  • Manages confidential databases: OneCause, MobileCause (Classy), Register to Ring.
  • Manages special projects and programs including Back to School, Adopt-A-Family, etc.
  • Ensures smooth, effective, and efficient execution of both the summer and Christmas Kettle campaigns.
  • Assists with coordination and execution of all other community donation projects, including coordinating with case management staff regarding clothing and household items for client needs.
  • Takes detailed CRD committee meeting minutes and distributes minutes in accordance with policy after final approval by the supervisor.
  • Supervises volunteers and interns assigned to help with special events or tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum education, experience, knowledge, skills and/or abilities required for this position.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field

Experience:

  • Event planning, marketing, social media, website development and/or not-for-profit development experience. OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications:

  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with approval to drive by TSA’s insurance carrier.

Skills:

  • Initiative, sound judgement, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and promotional skills
  • Excellent demonstrated oral and written communication skills

  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Suite, email, and use of the internet
  • Knowledge of software including: Photoshop, Freehand, Dreamweaver, JavaScript, Shockwave, and Macromedia Flash.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite: InDesign, Creative Cloud, Photoshop 
  • Experience in the use of audio and video production and editing equipment.
  • Must present a professional appearance.
  • Must be available and accessible for media appearances and issue news releases as the need arises.
  • Develop/possess an understanding of the importance of the work of The Salvation Army with a strong desire to support its mission
  • Knowledge of Salvation Army practices, policies, and organization is helpful

Full-time employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week will be eligible for full benefits, including health, dental, vision and hearing benefits, basic and voluntary life benefits, holiday pay and paid time off, which is pro-rated based on their regularly scheduled work week.

Health, dental, vision, and hearing benefits, as well as basic and voluntary life benefits, will begin on the first day of the month following 90 days of employment. If the completion of a 90-day waiting period occurs on the first day of the calendar month, coverage will begin on that day.
