The primary role of the Specialist, Content Development is to support the Director of External Communications’ efforts to raise the profile of Southern Company Gas and its local distribution, marketing and storage companies through compelling, convincing storytelling. This position is responsible for identifying, drafting and editing content for sharing across multiple mediums in support of Southern Company Gas’s External Communications department, including press releases, speeches, messaging, news pitches, media statements and web content. The Specialist of Content Development will also be responsible for leading development of the Corporate Communications editorial calendar and editing materials drafted by other members of the Corporate Communications team. On occasion, they may also be required to support external communications plan development and implementation.

The successful candidate will be a strong written and verbal storyteller who can adjust their writing style for various platforms and audiences, has a meticulous attention to detail, is able to juggle multiple assignments, works well with others and can effectively operate under tight deadlines.

Experience in journalism is preferred but not required; however, a minimum of 3-5 years in a communications-focused field is a must.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primarily focuses on developing, editing and publishing memorable, informational and/or persuasive content to highlight Southern Company Gas’s industry leading work; social, environmental and economic impact; and efforts to keep customers both safe and satisfied with their gas service, including: researching and creating original content and/or coordinating internally to develop content from other areas of the company (e.g., blogs, video scripts, press releases, messaging, reports, social media content, etc.). 
  • Develops and maintains the organization's style guide, including editorial standards and policies. 
  • Coordinates the development, integration, format, design and release of content with other writers and designers, ensuring all content is high-quality, up-to-date and consistent with brand and style guidelines. 
  • Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions. 
  • May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives. 
  • Other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit for a wide variety of formats - print publications, websites, videos scripts, correspondence, magazines, opinion columns, speeches, fact sheets, Q&As, etc. 
  • The ability to share published writing samples from news releases, newspaper, TV, online or other similar media upon request is required. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, media relations, or a related field or other related experience 
  • Strong communication, relational and technical presentation skills. 
  • Media experience preferred. 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant experience preferred. 
  • Ability to travel required (<25%).

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas simply and meaningfully to audiences of diverse backgrounds and education levels. 
  • Proactive contributor with an ability to take initiative and be resourceful. 
  • Proven ability to manage and complete complex projects in a timely, cost-effective manner. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and organization skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and coordinate with numerous colleagues. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team and act quickly with minimal supervision. 
  • Basic understanding of the energy industry preferred. 
  • Expert in AP style and grammar rules. 
  • Proficient in PowerPoint and Keynote. 
  • Familiar with digital communications platforms.
