Position Summary:

The Copywriter and Editor of Mercury Communications is accountable for the planning, creation and execution of Mercury Marine Marketing written content. Responsibilities include the copy integrity of marketing communications materials and programs through strategic direction and development of targeted messaging, delivery of written word content consistent with the Mercury brand voice and standards, and review of all print and web material to ensure it meets the highest editorial standards.

This role will oversee various communication projects and manage external partner execution of written communication in order to elevate, integrate and maintain a high standard of communication throughout the company. Objectives include stronger brand equity, improved audience engagement, and increased sales of Mercury products. The Copywriter and Editor reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and will collaborate extensively with the in-house creative team, retained external contractors, and key cross-functional stakeholders.

What will your primary responsibilities be?

  • Establish and integrate higher written communication standards throughout Mercury Marine, building impact for all communications and marketing efforts. 
  • Propose, determine and manage creation of written content that will strengthen the efforts and success of Mercury, its products, its people and its partners. 
  • Write, acquire, edit and distribute written communications that will broaden consumer awareness and perception of Mercury and its products, including oversight of development for key printed and digital publications. 
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive list of resources to contribute to content creation, including sponsored individuals, associations and entities; partner web sites and publications (BASS, ABA); Brunswick Boat Group companies; industry sources (NMMA, MRA, trade pubs, industry magazines); celebrities; customers; and more. 
  • Articulate and demonstrate the Go Boldly brand position via written word content across digital and print channels. 
  • Working from creative briefs, team with designers to develop and execute concepts for major product and marketing initiatives. 
  • Work with clients and colleagues to identify business objectives and ensure that creative solutions are on strategy—effectively explaining the creative strategy behind major marketing campaigns. 
  • Maintain and evolve Mercury brand style, including the written word style guide. 
  • Maintain tight quality control over all pieces created; write in Mercury voice and support brand positioning. 
  • Maintain thorough knowledge Mercury product lines, business channel communications needs, and major legal and compliance guidelines. 
  • Understand needs of assigned business partners, including Marketing, Sales, Engineering, Service and Product Category departments. 
  • Build productive, collaborative relations with sister companies within Brunswick Corporation as well as with customer organizations and partners outside the Brunswick family. 
  • Successfully incorporate changes and suggestions from internal department reviewers, business partners, and legal compliance reviewers. 
  • Maintain knowledge of industry and marketing communications trends and incorporate new ideas into company's process and procedures. 
  • Help Creative team workflow process run smoothly and find innovative ways to enhance it. 
  • Edit all copy for usage and grammar, to ensure it adheres to Mercury voice and brand positioning, and to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to style standards. 
  • Contribute to the evolving content strategy for the Mercury brand.
  • Influence consumers’ emotional connections with Mercury. 
  • Ensure that creative assets deliver on marketing objectives.

Who are we looking for?

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field 
  • Minimum 7+ years’ professional experience with 5+ years in marketing or communications 
  • Track record of accomplishment in cross-functional endeavors 
  • Knowledge of boating, boat engines and Mercury Marine 
  • Strong editing and writing skills, thorough knowledge of AP Style and boating terminology 
  • Experience in working with outside resources (freelance writers, PR professionals, etc.) 
  • Ability to create long- and short-term work calendars and to meet deadlines 
  • Creative, decisive, collaborative, responsive, able to work independently and take responsibility for decisions and outcomes. 
  • Skills to support a wide variety of assignments, including brochures, blogs, email content, website copy, sell sheets, internal publications, text messaging, press materials, and advertising copy. 
  • Experience in the marine industry or industry with a similar highly engineered products requiring compelling consumer communication. 
  • Public relations, media and internal communications experience.
