Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy Transformation and Communications within Global Operations & Supply Chain (GO&SC), the Senior Director Communications will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a communications strategy for the GO&SC organization within Medtronic. This role provides leadership to the communications team and ensures alignment on strategies and programs with the Global Communications and Corporate Marketing (GCCM) Organization of Medtronic. The senior director communications will serve as a strategic advisor and executive communications lead for the Executive Vice President of GO&SC and the GO&SC LT with respect to internal and external communications. Additionally, the individual will lead identified Corporate Communications initiatives in support of the Global Comms and the GO&SC business strategy.

This is a hybrid role with an expectation of being at OHQ (Fridley, MN) 3 days a week.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Create an annual and long-term strategic communications plan leveraging internal and external strategies to advance the GO&SC and Medtronic overall goals; work in partnership with the Global Communication and Corporate Marketing organization to ensure alignment 
  • Translate business strategy into integrated communications strategies that move employees and stakeholders to understand, and/or advocate for the organization 
  • Manage Executive VP digital presence and key meetings (Inside Medtronic, Yammer, town halls, ELT meetings) 
  • Translate business strategy for employees, provide strategic communications counsel to GO&SC leadership 
  • Supports GO&SC executive leadership in communicating to external and internal audiences by overseeing and executing the writing, editing and approval of event scripts, speeches, key documents and reports, interviews, FAQs 
  • Handles the creation and implementation of multiple forms of internal strategic communication activities, programs and content guided by the Medtronic Mission, GO&SC and overall business strategy. 
  • Directly manages communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization's reputation to both internal and external audiences. 
  • Lead communications strategies to excite and align employees to the business strategy and help employees navigate change 
  • Management and supervisory professionals who are focused on tactical, strategic and operational communication activities. 
  • Managing team performance, developing talent, engagement and inclusion, communicating business and operational developments. 
  • Enables direct team to support the function as business partners to their assigned organizations. 
  • Aligns team members around strategic priorities, ensure the right breadth of expertise on any project, coordinates team member availability and ensures projects stay on track to achieve desired impact. 
  • Delegate accountability for objectives and coach others how to tailor the rationale for a recommended communications approach (compelling for each audience). 
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Global Communications and Corporate Marketing (GCCM) to leverage resources, align on messaging and use data to measure the effectiveness of communications efforts and inform improvements/adjustments to future initiatives. 
  • Advocate for proactive, transparent communications; reflecting employee voices and perspectives 
  • Review and help shape plans so communications projects are integrated, and outcome focused

Must Have:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required 
  • Minimum of 15 years of integrated communications or corporate communications experience with 10+ years of managerial experience, or Advanced Degree with a minimum 13 years prior integrated communications or corporate communications experience, minimum of 10 years of managerial experience

Nice to Have:

  • Master‘s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field 
  • Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring direct reports 
  • Experience with issues management and corporate reputation expertise 
  • Experience working with and managing vendors/agencies/consultants 
  • Experience drafting and executing communications strategies and messaging outside of the US. 
  • Strong executive-level leadership skills and proven ability to build relationships and influence effectively cross culturally/geographically in a large global, matrix organization 
  • Experience building organization capability, leading through change and ability to navigate globally 
  • Proven ability to build trust and establish credibility with all levels of management, including executive leadership 
  • Proven business acumen with general management perspective 
  • Strong coaching and collaboration skills, team player 
  • Experience in managing organizational/culture change 
  • Highly influential, open minded and ability to build strong relationships with all level of leadership including executive level

  • Ability to develop and deliver strategic communications strategies and tactics with measurable outcomes, using multiple channels

  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and excel under pressure. 
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and translating Operations language to Business language 
  • Highly motivated with "can do" attitude and strong management skills 
  • Ability to take in multiple perspectives and drive communications counsel with senior leaders 
  • Comfortable with approx. 10% travel
