Brookfield Properties has an immediate need for a Sr. Specialist, Public Relations and Social Media at our Chicago office.

The Sr. Specialist, Public Relations and Social Media is responsible for both external communications with Brookfield Properties’ key audiences, including consumers, retail partners and the media. Reporting to the Director of Public Relations, this individual will assist with the development and execution of strategic public relations efforts on a corporate and property-level (shopping centers). Additionally, they will assist in proactive and reactive media relations for national and regional press; thorough tracking and analysis of all earned press coverage; and assist with crisis communication to the media and social channels.

Responsibilities:

Public Relations

  • Assist with planning and executing public relations plans and tactics to promote newsworthy items and initiatives 
  • Develop high-quality communications, such as news releases, backgrounders, strategic message platforms, opinion-editorials, and other materials for use with external media 
  • Monitor, track, and analyze the performance of media relations plans and strategies 
  • Assist with the execution of cross-departmental media and crisis training sessions 
  • Proactively build meaningful relationships with appropriate external media contacts and serve as their resource for Brookfield Properties’ retail portfolio 
  • Assist with media inquiry calls and emails from local, regional, and national media outlets 
  • Serve as gatekeeper of media coverage and initial requests for assistance or information from mall, regional, and corporate offices 
  • Assist with providing strategic messages and information to identified spokespersons, with the potential for providing on-site support for interviews 
  • Partner with communicators in other disciplines (such as Legal, HR, and Marketing) to facilitate an integrated approach 
  • Review daily media to flag appropriate industry and portfolio news to be shared via company intranet

Social Media

  • Collaborate with B2B team to craft corporate and initiative messaging for corporate channels 
  • During crisis, provide social media updates, status reports and briefings to stakeholders and functional teams 
  • Other assigned duties as required

General

  • Occasional travel may be required 
  • Weekend and evening hours will be required in crisis situations 
  • Other assigned duties as required

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in marketing, advertising, communications, journalism, or related field required. 
  • Master’s degree preferred

Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in corporate communications, media, public relations or related field 
  • 2+ years of PR experience with PR agency experience strongly preferred 
  • Knowledge of real estate preferred

Skills

  • Understanding of the media industry (local, regional, and national) and ability to handle media inquiries/calls daily 
  • Substantial knowledge of social media and its interconnected nature with public relations 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in copywriting and proofreading 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams 
  • Able to build and foster relationships both internally and externally 
  • Able to appropriately manage and prioritize workload and escalate issues or request support as needed to ensure internal deadlines, timetables and approvals are met
