Kalmbach Media, a publisher of hobby magazines and websites, is looking for an energetic, efficient and inquisitive staff writer for its expanding Trains.com web team. This position will be heavily focused on targeted and opportunistic web writing to support digital growth goals. You will play an integral role in helping us build out new content categories and satisfy the curiosity of our loyal and engaged audience of railroading and model railroading enthusiasts.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Write 10+ articles per week for Trains.com, including informational pieces, profiles/features and news. Incorporate SEO best practices, creative headlines and engaging ledes. 
  • Perform research and conduct interviews on various topics. 
  • Collaborate with digital editor and other Trains.com team members on web coverage, workflows and content opportunities. 
  • Pitch new story ideas and participate in content brainstorming sessions. 
  • Utilize analytics and data in content creation and curation efforts.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field 
  • Two to four years of relevant work experience (Publishing/media industry a plus) 
  • Ability to write clean copy for the web, utilizing SEO best practices, at a high frequency
  • Experience conducting interviews and research, and identifying appropriate sources
