Discovery to Product (D2P) seeks an experienced Strategic Communications Manager to develop and advance its strategic communications goals. D2P’s mission is to empower campus innovators to realize the Wisconsin Idea by transforming ideas into products and services that change the world. The Strategic Communication Manager will create and implement communications strategies and tactics that highlight D2P programs and UW innovation, including creating and curating content, generating earned media, and managing websites, email marketing and social media.

Principal duties:

  • Develop long- and short-term content strategies guided by D2P's strategic plan.
  • Plan and execute a calendar for D2P and Innovate Network communications.
  • Craft clear and compelling copy to promote D2P and Innovate Network programs for various channels, including web pages, email marketing, social media, and print publications such as flyers and brochures.
  • Pitch, plan, and produce original news and feature stories and innovator profiles for university-wide online publications such as Inside UW and the D2P and Innovate websites.
  • Write and distribute press releases to local and regional media, and coordinate content and responses to incoming media inquiries.
  • Develop talking points, PowerPoint presentations and other materials to support D2P programming and staff presentations and outreach efforts.
  • Administer the D2P and Innovate Network websites using WordPress. Coordinate website content, updates, and announcements with on and off campus partners. Coordinate with the Division of Information Technology for ongoing WordPress support and maintenance.
  • Plan, create, schedule, and monitor email marketing campaigns using Eloqua, including the monthly Innovate Insider newsletter, D2P program promotion, grant announcements, and other campaigns.
  • Manage and produce content for D2P's social media accounts.- Implement inclusive communication strategies to ensure reach and relevance to diverse groups and target audiences.
  • Monitor and report out on communications and outreach metrics, using analytics to measure success and inform communications strategy.
  • Occasionally hire and supervise work done by freelance designers, developers, writers, videographers, and photographers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education and on- and off-campus communicators for sharing content related to D2P and entrepreneurship.
  • Monitor, curate, solicit, and post news and events relevant to campus innovators for the Innovate website and monthly Innovate Insider newsletter.
  • Administer the Start In UW-Madison resource directory, including review and processing of new profile submissions and regular communication with partners to keep published profile listings up to date.
  • Foster relationships with Innovate Network members to continually improve the website's relevance and value.
  • Collaborate with D2P and Innovate Network colleagues during regular program and project planning meetings.
  • Support planning and execution of D2P programming by coordinating registration and attendance tracking, contributing to program planning and evaluation, helping to develop strategies to generate engagement and attendance, and staffing outreach events on and off campus.
  • Assist with coordinating D2P's presence at premier entrepreneurial events such as Forward Festival, Wisconsin Entrepreneurs, Conference, and Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium.
  • Support planning and execution of on-campus D2P sponsored entrepreneurial events such as the Chancellor's Entrepreneurial Achievement Awards, and other annual campus-wide events such as Startup Week.
  • Cross-promote and support partnered programming and events such as the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Entrepreneurons.
  • Develop an annual D2P Impact Report
  • Assist with the development of strategic plans, annual reports, and funding requests and reports.
  • Maintain supply of promotional materials for general use.
  • Fulfill communications requests in support of D2P, including monitoring and responding to emails sent to the D2P email account and inquiries received through the website, social media, or other channels.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree required.

At least three years of professional work experience required; five years preferred in the following areas:

  • Experience creating and implementing strategic and tactical communication plans with objectives such as developing a positive brand image, rolling out a new program, and attracting new clients or supporters
  • Developing, writing and/or editing content in various formats including web pages, brochures, flyers, press releases, email newsletters and social media
  • Superb writing and editing skills and exceptional attention to detail, particularly the ability to write with clarity, accuracy, and brevity
  • Experience with website design, development, and maintenance
  • Familiarity with email marketing software
  • Sound judgement and ability to communicate scientific, technical, or sensitive information when working with journalists or other members of the public or lay audiences
  • Experience with inclusive communication strategies and working with diverse audiences
  • Skilled at managing multiple, concurrent projects and meeting deadlines

Additional desired skills and experience:

  • Technical experience with WordPress and Eloqua software
  • Basic familiarity with principles of graphic design and software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Outreach event planning and staffing

Minimum: $45,643 ANNUAL (12 months). Depending on Qualifications.
