The Vice President, Communications will report to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and is responsible for developing and driving communications strategies that establish Opportunity as an industry thought leader; attract high-net-worth donors; attract new corporate and government partners, and add credibility to the existing donor base.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee the PR strategy that drive awareness to OI’s mission, values, CEO, and Senior Leadership 
  • Develop content and messaging for multimedia channels including speeches, social media campaigns, blogs entries, and talking points for the CEO and other key leaders 
  • Lead efforts to obtain high-profile media placements and develop press releases within targeted media outlets 
  • Edit content and ghostwrite, when necessary, across a variety of touchpoints 
  • Develop media kits for multimedia channels for the purpose of brand awareness and key messaging of client or assigned topics 
  • Project manage interviews, podiums, and articles featuring the CEO or senior executives as thought leaders 
  • Track metrics and evaluate the effectiveness of media touchpoints 
  • Collaborate with the VP of Marketing to develop and refine Opportunity’s core messages to ensure consistency in the organizational brand voice 
  • Collaborate with the VP Marketing and Director of Events to ensure brand voice consistency across all public-facing channels (media, PR, social media, website).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • None
  • Bachelor’s degree: ideally in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, preferred 
  • 5+years of media/PR experience with increasing responsibilities that yields deep knowledge of this landscape 
  • Managing experience and track record at an external PR Agency 
  • Proven experience in creating ideas for, project management, pitching, and securing high caliber press placements including national mainstream, Christian media preferred 
  • Superior writing skills, expert in Associated Press style with the ability to develop and edit high-quality materials including, communications plans, media POVs, press materials, fact sheets, bylined articles, trend analysis summaries, executive correspondence, and presentations. 
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Demonstrated capability to be a proactive planner & media “hunter” 
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape as it relates to nonprofits relating to poverty / economic development preferred 
  • Values accuracy, thoroughness, and high-quality outputs 
  • Ability to roll up your sleeves and work in a fast-paced, changing environment, maintaining a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities 
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, external partners, and donors 
  • Recognizes and adapts to cultural sensitivities 
  • Entrepreneurial attitude with a knack for building trusted relationships with clients and prospects that lead to additional, incremental new business opportunities. 
  • Passionate about Opportunity’s mission, vision, and values. 
  • Able to promote and communicate the organization’s goals and objectives to external and internal stakeholders.

  • English fluency required

  • Annual communications plan 
  • Press releases as needed 
  • Set number of placements and podiums (including 1 major high-profile placement)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Occasional domestic and international travel to attend media and donor events, collect content, interview clients, and understand programs, services, and client impact.
