The Wisconsin Humane Society is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. Founded in 1879, WHS operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. The organization offers adoption services, youth and outreach programs, veterinary resources for the community, retail stores, volunteer programs, and dog training classes. The Milwaukee shelter also houses the state's busiest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. WHS is an independent nonprofit and receives no general government funding and is not part of any national umbrella group. WHS maintains a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.

Are you looking for a rewarding career making a difference for animals and the people who love them? The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a full time Vice President of Development to lead a dynamic team of twenty fundraising staff across the organization’s seven locations. This position provides strategic oversight and leadership to the development team, empowering them to excel in connecting people to our work and inspiring support of our mission. This hybrid position offers the option to work from home with an onsite presence at the Milwaukee Campus and other locations as needed. The Vice President of Development reports to the President & CEO and serves as a key member of the organization’s leadership team, participating in organizational strategic planning, decision-making, and policy development to support our mission.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage all aspects of the Wisconsin Humane Society’s fundraising strategy and development program. 
  • Provide strategic oversight for the design and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising plan to grow the organizational revenue budget through the solicitation of individual gifts, major gifts, planned giving, grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. 
  • Expand and diversify WHS donor pipeline to secure funding for existing and new initiatives. 
  • Ensures effective donor cultivation, stewardship, and recognition strategies. 
  • Oversees special event strategy ensuring alignment with WHS fundraising goals. 
  • Ensures effective donor database management to include accurate and timely reporting. 
  • Build strong working relationships with and strategically engage the President & CEO, board members, leadership team, and colleagues; provide meaningful and valuable engagement opportunities to further the culture of philanthropy throughout WHS. 
  • Build an effective development team through hiring, leading, motivating, coaching, and developing staff. 
  • Manage the administrative functions of the development department including budget preparation and adherence, policies and procedures, and execution of donor agreements in order to improve quality and maintain regulatory compliance. 
  • Ensure all aspects of an excellent donor experience, including internal operations like database management and maintenance. 
  • Personally cultivate strong relationships to identify and inspire potential high-impact donors

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in non-profit management or related field, or equivalent experience; CFRE and/or advanced degree desirable 
  • Seven or more years of experience as a senior development officer or equivalent, in a nonprofit organization, with a minimum of three years of experience managing staff. Experience in a senior development role, partnering with other senior leadership, resulting in the development and implementation of sound, mission-based strategies 
  • Experience in or knowledge of nonprofit fundraising strategies, ideally in the following: foundation grants, individual major giving, corporate giving, planned giving, direct mail, digital giving, monthly giving, and fundraising events 
  • Experience leading successful capital campaigns 
  • Experience using donor management software (Raiser’s Edge preferred) 
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to deliver results 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including public speaking and the ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors. 
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, supervisory, and interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills 
  • Emotionally capable of handling high-pressure situations in a professional manner in a fast-paced environment 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Salary Range $105,000.00 - $120,000.00 Salary/year
