The videographer/photographer is a creative and innovative storyteller experienced in developing engaging, original visual content across multiple platforms to enhance and support overall marketing strategy. This role is part of a fast-paced, in-house Wisconsin Historical Foundation team that includes marketing, public relations, social media, and development professionals who work in collaboration to grow awareness of the Wisconsin Historical Society portfolio. Responsibilities include the development of high-quality visual assets in a variety of styles and shooting locations, both in studio and in the field. This is a hands-on role that requires a versatile and accomplished professional experienced in both mediums who will take projects from the initial planning stage through post production – while tailoring content to specific audience segments. The videographer/photographer will be comfortable working independently and handling multiple projects at a time under tight turnaround.

The videographer/photographer may office at a remote location, but will be required to attend in-person events and meetings at Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters in Madison as necessary. Equipment will be provided. The role will also require travel among the 12 Wisconsin Historical Society historic sites and museums, which are located throughout the state.

Primary Duties:

  • Concept and develop compelling visual content that elevates the Wisconsin Historical Society brand and effectively engages audiences with its story. 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the department and across the organization to identify content ideas that support marketing strategy and goals. 
  • Develop and execute annual content capture calendar that includes assets for social media, web, email marketing, advertising, blogs, fundraising, etc. 
  • Manage and execute video and photo projects from start to finish: pre-production, production and post-production. 
  • Collaborate with writers on script development; create storyboards as needed. 
  • Scout shoot locations and assesses possible obstacles to capturing assets; provide solutions or alternatives. 
  • Execute assignments requiring talent recruitment, casting and direction, camera operation, lighting, and audio. 
  • Plan and perform video post-production tasks, including reviewing footage, making editorial decisions, logging, audio adjustment, color correction, adding photographs, motion graphics, audio and music, and final editing using post-production software. 
  • Utilize computer graphics and special effects for video post-production in accordance with the overall production concepts; compresses/encodes video projects for output; makes video products available in a variety of formats; observes brand standards, ensures consistency and relevancy to production; monitors technical quality of end product; and coordinates internal and external duplication services as required. 
  • Capture photo assets in candid, staged and studio settings using both natural and studio lighting. Edit/color correct final assets to deliver a high-quality end product. 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for videography- and photography-related vendors and agencies, as needed.
  • Manage and maintain a digital archive of all video and photography assets. 
  • Maintain all video/photography equipment in excellent working condition; recommend upgrades/additions to inventory as necessary.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in film, videography, photography, multimedia, etc. preferred. 
  • 3 – 5 years of professional videography experience with links to portfolio/demo reel. 
  • 3 – 5 years of professional photography experience with links to portfolio. 
  • Demonstrated experience in all facets of pre-production, production and post-production Experience in a content-creation role within a team of creative professionals (media, marketing, advertising, communications, public relations) a plus. 
  • Expert storyteller with exceptional command of visual, communication, narrative, and camera and motion design principles across a wide variety of projects. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment and successfully manage project timelines and expectations of internal clients. 
  • Experience managing video and photo shoots; experience recruiting and casting talent a plus. 
  • Professional experience in camera operation, including knowledge of camera set-up, lighting, etc. as relates to both videography and photography. 
  • Highly-developed skills in video editing, visual effects, motion graphics and compositing.
  • Proven expertise using Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere ( or other editing suites and compression software) and Adobe After Effects. 
  • Professional photography experience - candid, portraiture, commercial and product desirable. 
  • Experience operating a drone to capture aerial footage. FAA Drone Certification a plus.
  • Experience using/managing a digital management asset system desirable; PhotoShelter experience a bonus. 
  • Comfortable juggling multiple projects simultaneously and ability to pivot as needed on tight deadlines. 
  • Capable of working independently, prioritizing workload and making proactive decisions that effectively move projects forward. 
  • Aptitude for both run-and-gun and high-profile shoots and ability to switch between the two workflows seamlessly. 
  • Ability to transport/carry/setup all physical equipment as needed.

Physical Demands:

This position may entail: Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
