Under the direction of the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Visual Communications Coordinator is responsible for the graphic design of the agency’s external and internal communications, which inform diverse audiences that include riders, partners, and employees. These printed and electronic materials require precise illustrations, data-driven infographics, and occasional videos that convey technical information precisely and engagingly. The incumbent will make substantial creative contributions to RTA’s publications and website. The incumbent will work closely with RTA subject matter experts and, as needed, with graphic design and printing consultants to leverage in-house capabilities. The coordinator will also work collaboratively with the Service Boards (CTA, Metra, and Pace) and other agency partners to promote usage of transit and understanding of the RTA’s mission.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the conception and execution of graphics, print layout, web design, and photography, along with occasional digital video recording and editing. 
  • Performs the effective use of design to ensure usability of web and social media content. 
  • Ensures the creation of high-impact infographics, including static charts for print or PDF and interactive visualizations for web. 
  • Performs occasional digital photography/videography and editing. 
  • Performs oversight branding for consistency and impact. 
  • Demonstrates a commitment to iterative design that relies on constructive feedback for improving team-based processes and products. 
  • Ensures consistent adherence to RTA strategic objectives, as developed by the Board of Directors, while providing services of the highest level to our customers — both internal and external.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, photography, journalism, public relations, communications, or related field of study. At least three (3) years’ experience in non‐profit, governmental, or corporate public relations, with personal responsibility for graphic design and other visuals for print and electronic communication. Full command of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop). Advanced knowledge of typography and layout principles, including design concepts such as balance, special relationships (negative and proximity), movement, color theory, contrast, unity, repetition. Expert understanding of image resolutions, CMYK/PMS/RGB color formats, file formats, and their relationships to print and web content. Experience working with print vendors, illustrators, and photographers, as well as working with Xerox printers and offset presses. Experience with digital photography and videography preferred. Knowledge of basic HTML and CSSS is a plus. Critical thinking and problem solving applied to graphic design for print and electronic communications.

A passion for conveying complex information visually through reports and web content based on effective design that emphasizes infographics. Attention to detail, with ability to spot, correct, and avoid errors. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Creative thinking and problem‐ solving skills. Ability to work effectively with multiple individuals and manage several projects at once. Ability to multi‐task and produce high‐quality work on tight deadlines. Ability to follow through on assigned tasks with limited supervision.

Salary Range: $45,000 to $55,000.

The RTA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The RTA reimburses for travel at the federal rate for mileage reimbursement. Relocation is not available.
