Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Marketing and Promotions Director to join WMSE. The Marketing and Promotions Director manages and directs the promotion, advertising, and public relations of the station to the public. Maintains the WMSE station brand and creates a station image that attracts and engages new listeners, donors, and program underwriters. Acts as a liaison with the station’s format and underwriting sales to develop overall campaigns, themes, and marketing approaches. Organizes and develops events and contests, both on-air and online. Working closely with station management and underwriting sales to maximize both the ratings and revenue. Works also to enhance public service partnerships.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain timely and relevant content on WMSE website, blogs, social media platforms, updating events, information, and images on a daily and weekly basis to ensure information is current and error-free. 
  • Utilize creative, integrated marketing strategies to continually grow WMSE’s loyal listener base and expand its reach through programming, marketing, communications, events, and experiences 
  • Generate results-oriented creative and organic concepts and ideas proactively. Gather information, write content, and edit WMSE’s weekly eNewsletter transmitted weekly.
  • Coordinate live in-studio guests and performances, including Local/Live, WMSE’s weekly local music feature program every Tuesday as well as talent during WMSE Membership Drives. 
  • Schedule in-studio interviews the connection between program host and interviewee. 
  • Work with station management and development to coordinate on-going marketing of WMSE in coordination with MSOE Marketing Communications, this includes print, on-air, social media, web and blogs. 
  • Supervises station contests including originating or adapting ideas, arranging prizes and listener events. Oversees, schedule and coordinates giveaways (tickets, CDs, DVDs, and other merchandise) to acquire listener’s contact information to cultivate support. 
  • Work directly with station manager and music director to coordinate station-sponsored concerts and events on and off campus. 
  • Writing promotional scripts for production pertaining to events, WMSE identity and sponsorships 
  • Possess a thorough and intense knowledge of Milwaukee, not limited to musicians, businesses, arts organizations, non-profits, neighborhoods, and people. 
  • Coordinates activities with other MSOE departments and is involved in production of promotions and remotes. Represents the station at community events, promotions, festivals, university events, etc. 
  • Directly supervises employees or volunteers assigned to promotions.

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Required to make routine public appearances on behalf of WMSE. This will include weekend and evening commitments. 
  • Creates an environment where listeners feel welcome and part of the station and station sponsored/related events. 
  • Must be able to help with the training and supervision of community volunteers.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and several years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Must have the ability to multi-task along with having other organizational skills and flexibility.
  • Must have experience with web CMS platforms, strong writing skills, and be able to handle an occasional air shift. 
  • A working knowledge of the public radio broadcasting industry including hardware and technology is desirable.

Language Skills 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before others.  Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form. 

Mathematical Skills 

  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations. 
Reasoning Ability 
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions 
Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus. 

 Work Environment 

  • The job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
