Do you love downtown Milwaukee and are interested in public relations, marketing and event planning? The Westown Association is seeking two unpaid Marketing & Events Interns for summer 2020 (mid-May – August).

The Westown Association is seeking two unpaid Marketing & Events Interns for summer 2020 (mid-May – August). As well as additional marketing and public relations tasks, one intern will concentrate on the planning and execution of the Westown Farmers’ Market and the other will concentrate on the planning and execution of River Rhythms.

This internship is for students with an interest in event planning, and are majoring in public relations, marketing or any communications related field. We’ll also work to help the student meet school credit requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Event Coordination of the Westown Farmers’ Market – Intern will assist staff with organization, planning and execution of the Westown Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays, June 3 – October 7 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Zeidler Union Square). Duties include:

  • Recruiting vendors
  • Preparing weekly email blasts & scheduling social media posts
  • Preparing special event press releases
  • On-site assistance every Wednesday, June through August from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. which includes set-up & take-down, vendor traffic & coordination, customer assistance & social media updates

Event Coordination of River Rhythms – Intern will assist staff with organization, planning and execution of the River Rhythms (Wednesdays, June 10 – September 2 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. at Pere Marquette Park). Duties include:

  • Scheduling volunteers & promotions
  • Preparing weekly email blasts & scheduling social media posts
  • Preparing weekly press releases & emcee scripts
  • On-site assistance every Wednesday, June through August from 3:30 – 9:30 p.m. which includes set-up & take-down, beverage sales & inventory, customer assistance & social media updates

Events other than the Farmers’ Market & River Rhythms may arise in which both interns would be involved.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES: Intern will assist Marketing & Events Coordinator with general marketing and office management tasks such as:

  • Preparing bi-monthly e-newsletters & event email blasts
  • Preparing social media posts for Facebook, Twitter & Instagram
  • Planning & preparation for future Westown events such as membership mixers, stakeholder sessions and the Westown Golf Open
  • Updating websites including westown.org & parkmilwaukee.com
  • Assisting with graphic design work if able
  • Maintaining databases, mailing lists & vital records
  • Creating & updating Westown Intern manual
  • Helping with general office functions including answering phones, greeting guests, office maintenance, mass mailings, meeting preparation and other projects as assigned by the Marketing & Events Coordinator
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior college standing & enrolled in a college pursuing a degree in public relations, marketing or other communications related fields
  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented & capable of managing multiple tasks
  • Self-starter who is energetic, outgoing & learns quickly
  • Ability to work with a variety of professionals to keep projects on track
  • Ability to work under deadlines with creativity & a sense of humor
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Those with knowledge in graphic design, photography & Word Press are encouraged to apply
  • Familiarity with Downtown Milwaukee is helpful
  • Prior office experience is preferred
  • Candidate should expect to work at event sites that will require moderate physical activity

Candidate must be able to meet the following time requirements

  • Be able to start internship in mid-May and continue through end of August 2020
  • Work within a consistent schedule during normal office hours, preferably 2-3 days per week
  • Must be available every Wednesday during the course of the internship for their assigned event: Farmers’ Market (7 a.m. – 3 p.m.) or River Rhythms (3:30 – 9:30 p.m.)
  • Flexible scheduling, 15 hours per week minimum (includes event hours)

Although this internship is unpaid, it can be structured for school credit. Intern can expect to build their portfolio while having access to a network of downtown professionals. Parking is provided.
